Your first transcript

  1. Import an audio or video file. On Mac, you can also drag a recording into the app.
  2. Choose the language spoken in the recording. Add speaker guidance if you have it.
  3. Select Transcribe. Keep the iPhone or iPad app open while it works.
  4. Review the words and voices, then copy or export your transcript.

Speaker models are included with the app. First use may download speech assets for your language from Apple, so use a reliable internet connection for that setup. Once those assets are available, processing runs on your device without a cloud transcription service.

Devices, languages, and files

DropTranscript requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later on supported hardware, or macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon. On-device speech recognition is not available on every device; the app checks availability and lists the languages supported by its speech models.

MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, WAV, and other media supported by Apple’s frameworks can work. The audio codec matters, not just the file extension. DRM-protected media cannot be read.

If a recording won’t open

Make sure the file is fully downloaded and contains audible speech. Try exporting its audio to a compatible WAV or M4A file using a media app. If it still fails, email the error message and file type; you don’t need to send the recording.

A speaker is wrong—or unassigned

Open Speakers, then Review unassigned. Listen to the passage, choose the right person, or Skip when you’re unsure. Undo reverses the most recent assignment. Names save automatically as you type.

Before transcription or another speaker-detection pass, add a clear solo-voice example, ideally 3–20 seconds with little background noise. An expected speaker count can also help. Names alone cannot identify voices.

With Remember speakers enabled, confirmed names and voice references can be remembered in People across recordings on that device. A saved name without a voice reference is not enough for automatic recognition. People does not sync between iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Automatic matches are suggestions, not proof of identity. Overlapping voices, short passages, and poor audio may need manual correction.

A word is wrong

Listen to the original audio from the passage’s timestamp and correct its text. Recognition can miss names, accents, quiet speech, or words spoken at the same time. A clean recording and the correct language help, but there is no 100% accuracy guarantee.

Check the recording before relying on an important quotation or attributing it to someone.

Saving and exporting

Use Export to choose a format and destination. ChatGPT-ready text includes readable timestamps and speaker labels. Plain text, Markdown, SRT, WebVTT, and JSON are also available. JSON keeps original recognition alongside your edits.

Copying or exporting does not upload anything to ChatGPT. You decide whether—and where—to share it afterward. A cloud-synced export folder is managed by the provider you choose.

If a save fails, choose another writable destination and check available storage. The app’s local library and the exported copy are separate.

Your library and backups

Recording options lets you rename a library title or delete the app’s copy. Deleting a recording does not delete its original source, separate exports, or remembered People.

Turning Remember speakers off retains People but disables automatic remembering, learning, and recognition. Forgetting a person removes their People entry and voice references; names already written into transcripts remain.

Export important transcripts and keep independent copies of recordings. The app excludes its recording and People libraries from automatic system backups. There is no developer-hosted copy to recover if local files are lost.

Processing stopped or was interrupted

Keep the app open on iPhone and iPad while processing. Make sure you have enough free storage and, for the first model download, a stable connection.

An interrupted recording remains in the library. Starting transcription again replaces the current transcript, so export any important edits first.

Please don’t attach a private meeting, transcript, or voice sample by default. If an example is needed, use a short, non-sensitive recording. Remove personal information from screenshots before sending them.
